ASC 842 accounting for a vehicle lease
Company cars and fleet vehicles are typically 3–5 year leases paid monthly. Depending on the term versus the vehicle's economic life and any bargain purchase option, they can be finance leases.
What to watch for on a vehicle lease
If the lease term covers a major part of the vehicle's economic life, or there is a purchase option you are reasonably certain to exercise, the vehicle lease is a finance lease — the ROU asset amortizes straight-line and interest is front-loaded.
